Economic Liaison with U.S. G 5 Chungking.

As instructed I reported to General Olmsted on the 8th June. He gave me an outline of the circumstances necessitating the establishment of G 5, its functions and the manner in which local conditions made those functions rather different from those of G 5 in other theatres. It was then arranged that I should meet the heads of the various branches of G 5, and I completed my mound of the officos concerned quring the past week. This was arranged to enable me to receive from each officer a more detailed survey of the work of his branch, and to ascertain what assistance, if any, he required from British organisations now and in the future.

2. G 5 is organised as follows:-

Mr. C.N. Joyner is attached to G 5 as liaison officer from F.E.A.

3. I have now talked to the heads of all the above branches of G 5 with the exception of Colonel Junge, (Military Government) who only took up his duties on the 14th June and therefore will see me after he has settled in, and Colonel Edwards with whose Branch I am not authorised to liaise. I summarise my discussions below:

a)

Requirements and assignments Branch.

This Branch is responsible for the screening of Chinese requisitions, for the assignment of lease-lend supplies and for determining the priority of such supplics, It works closely with the F.E.A. and the appropriate Chinese Ministries and Departments. At present its policy is to give priority to the requirements of the American sponsored Chinese Divisions.

From the British anglo Messrs. Asquith and Watterson maintain close liaison with this branch. It does not appear as if the Economic Liaison officer will be

required/
